Saivam - Ancient Tamil & Other Spiritual Texts

ஸங்கல்பம் - Sankalpam

The Sankalpam (ஸங்கல்பம் / सङ्कल्प) is the formal statement of intent recited at the
very beginning of any pooja. Holding water (or flowers) in the right palm, the worshipper
fixes the exact place and moment in cosmic time and declares the purpose of the worship —
here, the Pradosha Kala worship of Lord Shiva.

Choose your date and time below and the calendar values fill in throughout the page.

📍 Calculated for Olympia, Thurston County, Washington (47.0451°N, 122.8950°W · America/Los_Angeles) — this page's fixed location. Everything in amber below must be changed if you are worshipping elsewhere.

🌍 Changing the place — the amber values

The geography in a Sankalpam is stated from the traditional cosmology outward: continent
(dvīpa), land (varṣa), region (khaṇḍa), then river, city and home. Replace every amber
value
with your own. The two mappings in widest use:

  Bhārata (India) North America
bearing மேரோ: த³க்ஷிணே பார்ஶ்வே · meroḥ dakṣiṇe pārśve (south of Meru) ஸப்த ஸமுத்³ரான்தரே · sapta samudrāntare (across the seven seas)
river your nearest sacred river + நதீ³ தீரே your nearest river + நதீ³ தீரே
city your city + மஹா நக³ரே your city + மஹா நக³ரே

⚠️ The Krauñca dvīpa / Ramaṇaka varṣa / Aindra khaṇḍa identity is the convention in
common use among priests officiating in North America; it is an adaptation, not a fixed
scriptural assignment, and other paddhatis differ. For continents other than these two
there is no single agreed mapping — ask your guru or officiating priest rather than
guessing. The India column is the standard and uncontested one.

The river is whichever river your town stands on or near — it need not be famous.
Olympia’s is the Nisqually. If no river is at hand, many simply omit the நதீ³ தீரே phrase.

After “kariṣye”, release the water/flowers from the palm into the offering plate, and
proceed with the Pradosha Kala Shiva pooja.
