About Panchangam
Panchangam (पञ्चाङ्ग) literally means “five limbs” in Sanskrit. The Panchangam is the Hindu calendar system that divides each day into five main components:
Tithi (Lunar Day)
- 30 tithis per lunar month
- Determined by the angle between Sun and Moon
- Each tithi is associated with specific auspicious activities
Nakshatra (Lunar Mansion)
- 27 constellations the Moon passes through
- Each takes approximately one day to cross
- Important for planning ceremonies and rituals
Nithya Yoga (Auspiciousness)
- Derived from the sum of the Sun’s and Moon’s sidereal longitudes
- There are 27 Nithya Yogas in the daily cycle (this is the panchangam “yoga”) — distinct from the 100+ planetary yogas of natal astrology
- Each carries its own quality — some favourable, some to be avoided

Karana (Half-Tithi)
- 60 half-day periods in a lunar month
- Two per tithi
- Each has specific characteristics for actions
Hora (Planetary Hour)
- 24-hour cycle divided into planetary hours
- Each hour is ruled by a different planet
- Important for timing specific activities

- 90-minute period each day
- Time of day varies by day of week
- Considered unsuitable for important activities
Abhijit Muhurta (Auspicious Time)
- 48-minute window around noon
- Considered highly auspicious

Pradosha Times (Worship Period)
- Occurs twice monthly on the 13th lunar day
- 3-hour window around sunset
- Sacred time for Shiva worship
